The new Stephen King book, UNDER THE DOME, is the best thing he's done in... well, a very long time. Of course I am only 697 pages into it (it just came out yesterday), and DUMA KEY did turn into a pumpkin -- a bad, lame pumpkin at that -- so it could all turn to dogshit before too much longer. But I don't think so. Sure, none of the component parts are terribly original, and his technical form is a tad sloppy in places (confusing "dikes" with "dykes," which was kind of amusing, but still a blooper), but in terms of pure story-telling he really brought his A-game. He actually did some research this time around instead of just winging it, too, which helps. The story itself is essentially a high-tech cross between THE TOMMYKNOCKERS and NEEDFUL THINGS, both nominally science-fiction stories that are actually thinly-veiled homages to the immortal TWILIGHT ZONE episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street." Seeing as how I liked the original TZ episode and both of the aforementioned King books, I don't think it's entirely surprising I like the new one. But it hasn't disappointed me yet. (Key word: yet.)

Black Canyon Drone starts things off right away with a blast of hyper
distorted guitar and doesn't stop for the remainder if the cassette.
Hidden melodies float in and out, with the occasional riff and drum
beat surfacing. Death Disco slows things down with stumbling drums
over layers of murk and blackened filth. Dissonance and Submission
finishes everything off with walls of buzz and shards of feedback. Not
for the open-minded.

Well, this is a bummer. The magazine of which he speaks, WRITERS DIGEST, used to be the ultimate source of high-quality information on writing for publication, and you could even have it delivered to your doorstep, no less. (In fact, I have two heavy-ass boxes full of back issues spanning about fifteen years, and I still refer to them from time to time... although I really wish I had it all on CD-ROM so I could access the information a lot faster and toss the magazines in the recycle bin before the next move.) The magazine's quality level started to drop in the early 90s, though, and with the exception of one year about a decade ago when I subscribed again to see if the magazine had improved (it hadn't; in fact, it had gotten even worse), I haven't read it in ages. Boo hoo, I am a sad cheese now....
